Scarring-Allopecia

Scarring Alopecia
Scarring Alopecia, also known as Cicatricial Alopecia, is the collection of hair loss disorders that can destroy the hair roots partially or completely resulting in permanent hair loss. It begins as one or more permanent bald patches on the scalp. The patches on the skin appear smooth and shiny. The skin pores are absent because of a complete loss of follicular openings.
As dentists we believe prevention is always better than cure and will always encourage and help you to look after your teeth so you don't develop tooth decay in the first place. If you do have decay and need a filling then we recommend white fillings as a good solution that is both aesthetic and functional.
Symptoms of scarring alopecia
As the hair loss is due to inflammation that hampers the follicles below the skin surface, there is usually no visible scar on the scalp. The symptoms of scarring alopecia may vary based on the type of alopecia. However, the affected areas of the scalp may show some signs
i itching scalp
ii redness
iii burning of the scalp
iv pus or purulent discharge from the scalp
v pain
vi patches of rough and scaly skin
vii formation of blisters
viii crusting
ix increased or decreased pigmentation
x draining sinuses
Treatment Options Available For Scarring Alopecia
The main objective of the treatment is to prevent further hair loss and to cover the bald areas. As hair loss is due to the complete destruction of hair follicles, hair regrowth is not possible. The treatment is carried out to reduce the symptoms of inflammation. Hair transplant treatment is performed to cover the bald-patched areas on the scalp, only if there are sufficient undamaged donor hair follicles left.
Primary scarring alopecia can be treated with different inflammatory cells like neutrophils or lymphocytes, but the treatment options vary for specific types.
Surgical treatment for cosmetic benefit is also an option in some cases after the disease has been inactive for one to two or more years. Hair restoration surgery or scalp reduction may be considered in these cases.
